Car wheels on a gravel road

February 26, 2009 · 2 Comments

Yep, Lucinda Williams is playing this weekend and the gang is headed down from NC!  Shame about my sinus infection keeping me from winning any “good housekeeping awards” . Domestic diva I’m not nor have ever been  (and hopefully their love for me adjusts expectations accordingly). And 2 cats do not a housekeeper make — IMHO. Of course, 2 cats may make me get a housekeeper . . .

Doesn’t matter though! Just looking forward to great talks, music, visits, updates and sharing of dreams and encouragement. And food! Can’t forget food (this weekend I’m “off diet”.)

But I’ll kick start all of that with a massage this afternoon. Long, overdue, massage. If I’m reduced to a puddle, then maybe someone from NC can come “sweep up my lazy bones” before the show. (I know, Beck and Lucinda is an odd pairing.)

Hopefully I’ll have pictures next week. Darling Nikki has been a bit impatient with me lately.

Have a great weekend!

New Orleans

February 24, 2009 · 3 Comments

Since it’s Fat Tuesday and all . . . this little poem found its way to me today and I thought I’d share.

New Orleans by Lola Ridge

Do you remember
Honey-melon moon
Dripping thick sweet light
Where Canal Street saunters off by herself among quiet trees?
And the faint decayed patchouli—
Fragrance of New Orleans . . .
New Orleans,
Like a dead tube rose
Upheld in the warm air . . .
Miraculously whole.

post-euphoric monday buzz

Naughty clowns, flashing lights, bendy twins and dancing skeletons — Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza was a big visual feast yesterday afternoon. I’m not sure how it ranks against the others that I’ve seen, but it was still the magical concoction of all that is awe and heart stopping. And this year I had the added benefit of sharing it with Lily who is 5 and was definitely intrigued by the whole thing (“They are NOT going to ride that bike across that wire?!”). A few times even Mendy looked like she had  stopped breathing and Lori was surely as impressed as everyone else by the unicyclist, jugglers and chair climbers. And the big wheel riders deserve second mentioning — really check them out here. Of course, I also couldn’t help but notice the production details that make all that magic work. That may be the coolest aspect of the whole show.

Then to follow that up with the Oscars. Wow. Jon Stewart was phenomenal. I didn’t know he could sing AND dance. And boy does he look great in a tux! I think he’s been working on his tan too. I’m not sure about the Aussie accent — at times it didn’t play to well coming from a Jew from Jersey. His love for the musical being choreographed to a T with the vocal assist by Beyonce — I’m still reeling from it all. And the awards themselves, I liked the changes. My favorite being how they presented the screenplay nominees.

Such a great weekend. I still have stars in my eyes.

Oscar conspiracy

February 19, 2009 · 5 Comments

OK, I’ve thought it ever since I heard that Hugh Jackman was hosting the Oscars and now I want to be public about it so that you all can bow down and worship my clairvoyant being when I’m right — Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars.

That’s the surprise, that’s why he’s not got new episodes this week, that’s why he said a week before the Jackman announcement to one of his guests that he’d “see him at the show”. It all fits.

And it has to fit. Mainly because I missed the Oscars that he did host due to being in a non-Oscar obsessed land and I love Jon Stewart.

Time will tell. And if I’m wrong, post all the raspberries you want. Oh, and please feel free to publicly poke holes in my theory — it will make the “called-it” moment much sweeter.

Quote of the day

February 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Thanks to Borders drastic after-New Year’s-calendar sale, every morning at work I have some poetry to greet me. Today’s comes from May Sarton:

Poetry exists to break through to below the level of reason where the angels and monsters that the amenities keep in the cellar may come out to dance, to rove and roar, growling and singing, to bring life back to the enclosed rooms where too often we are only ‘living and partly living’.

Which brings to mind several things, one is that I clearly need to read more Sarton and another is I wonder what Frost could say to that and lastly is that it is a little stuffy in here. Poetry please?

Incidental discoveries

February 12, 2009 · 4 Comments

Probably most of you have not noticed my preoccupation lately. It is one of the benefits of a virtual relationship — the fact that there are screens and wires and space between us. You can’t see the bags under my eyes or all of the stress that lives in my brow. For that, be thankful, because I’ve had a nasty habit of putting my friends and family through hell this year.

Not intentionally of course; these things start off small. A minor gripe in the stomach, a call to the doc. Tests are run. In short, on Jan. 8th I was told I had a lesion on my pancreas. The lesion began to change names. Some called it a mass, some a cyst. In the end, my good doctors and I settled on calling it a cyst. Others still think of it as my speck.

I really am not educated in bodily functions. The basics I have down, we eat with our mouth, see with our eyes . . . you get my point. But the deep down gooey stuff I’m really at a loss. Imagine my surprise then when I began learning about the small strange looking thing that attracted the attention of a cyst. The pancreas is a bit of a prick. It doesn’t forgive you, it’s stuck in its ways, it will not operate once it’s pissed off at you. With this knowledge, combined with the awful revelations about Patrick Swayze and Justice Ginsburg in the pancreatic news front, I began to panic.

After the blood, fecal, endoscopic, ultrasound, CT scan and the final endoscopic ultrasound (!) tests the end result was a 5.5 cm cyst behind the pancreas which was drained (almost all the way) last Wednesday. Today, today being the birthday of Darwin and Lincoln, today my new hero in a  white coat told me that the 33 cc’s of thick protein filled fluid is benign. (And yes, if James Lipton ever has the chance to ask me what my favorite word in the english language is, I will say “benign”. )

There are several beautiful things that have happened because of all of this. My favorite is the introduction of the term “incidental discovery” — the pain that brought on the doctors and the tests and the knowledge  is probably not my pancreas at all. Turns out that my juicy cyst is an “incidental discovery”.

So here are a few of my own incidental discoveries during this process: 1. Certain words can stop you dead — “mass” being one of them. They also have the power to change your life. 2. We are not isolated creatures — everyone needs their hand held sometimes. If you say you don’t, you probably haven’t heard the right words. (and no, I never knew that for certain before). 3. Parents are the most unfortunate people in the world. However, they will hold your cold feet when you are so scared you feel like your heart has stopped beating. And so they are also the best people in the world. 4. Perspectives change, the world shifts, the things you want now will not matter later and everything really will be fine, no matter what. Or it won’t, and that’s ok.

So, I’ll try to be more honest in the future, but this was not something I was going to blog about until I knew what was what. Try to find some discoveries on you own this month — just avoid doctors in doing so.

favorite virtual things

February 11, 2009 · 3 Comments

Rather than write, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things found in the electronic world of late.

First, the VSL http://www.veryshortlist.com/home/ — it’s random goodness which basically just emails you something cool you can find on-line (article links, book reviews, web sites, etc.). No rhyme or reason behind the emails, but the homepage does have things broken up a bit. Today’s very short list was the GeoEye’s satellite photography site (please check it out when you want real shock and awe).

Second, the LOSTpedia http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page is a great place to go if you have an ever increasing obsession and frustration with the ABC series LOST. Shelby turned me on to it and also pointed out some shortcomings (which clearly she needs to go and add since I think it’s interactive).

And third should be no surprise, the revamped White House site still seems to be morphing from time to time, but since the news is all grim and nagging — it’s nice to see the sunny spin that can emit from THE administration. http://www.whitehouse.gov/

So now you know what I do with my precious work time. Well, that and the king of all addictions and therefore should be mentioned with the strong warning to NOT become a victim http://lexulous.com/ which is the best way to play a wordy board game online.

Oh, and one other bit of beauty — for stunning photos of the Oscar acting nominees, find the New York Times photos of them here . Gorgeous portraits by Paolo Pelligrin. Thank you so much Lori for that link.

tidbits

February 3, 2009 · 1 Comment

First, what happened with the groundhog? I was news deprived. Considering tomorrow’s high is in the low 30s, I’m hoping it was some good news.

Second, happy 43rd anniversary mom and pops! I guess I need to start saving up now for that golden anniversary present.

Third, boo hiss Shelby. Somehow (perhaps the inability to sit in pants) I got smooth talked into the 11 day diet (aka torture to the food loving me). Sure I get 4 meals, but what about the rest??? Boo, hiss. Though, I must say, my banana shake this morning has me stuffed to the gills. However, we should still throw virtual snowballs at her (and send a glare on my behalf towards the direction of Raleigh NC).

Fourth, wish me happy calm thoughts tomorrow at around 1 EST. More on that later . . .

a dopo!
